2.25 miles from The 101 to Avila Beach. Flat. Scenic. Substantially shady for those hot days. We like to hike to Avila Beach for brunch, and then back to our parked car at The 101.

If you are looking for a good place to test out your new Rad Rover E-bike, or your legs on a conventional mt bike and get rewarded with spectacular views, this is the spot for you.
It is easy to get to, right at the south end of the brake check on the top of the Cuesta Grade pull over to TV Tower road and park--or you can drive up the paved/dirt road if you want to take some of the climbing out of the mix.
I usually park right off the freeway and ride my bike up. It's about a mile up before the good vistas start taking your breath away. I've gone about 6 miles up and it is a great trail, actually a dirt road, so no scary single track action. (you can take "Shooters down to Cal Poly if you want to get your heart pumping!)
Bring some water, your camera, and don't be in a hurry, there are lots of great spots to take pictures of the coast from Point Sal to Cambria.

They are working on the lake while currently dredging. Once this is done, it will hold more water and perhaps you can fish. They will likely upgrade the roads and walkways as well. There is a disc golf course, a playground for the kids and picnic area, plenty of green grass to put out a blanket, and barbeques. There are rustic restrooms, but notice that you may run into homeless there. It is a pervasive issue throughout town, so not unique to the lake.

A well maintained trail, with the exception of the star thistle in some parts of the trail. If your dog tend s to roam off the path, be careful of foxtails. Well enough traveled to be a safe trail. Please pick up after your dogs, as bags are provided.

There is lots of up and downhill walking. The map at the kiosk does not show the topographic layout so it's hard to tell what trail to take. We hiked all of the trails and there are some that required a few stops along the way do the steepness of the climb. They were all do-able. We ran into a couple of courteous bikers along the way who were able to handle the hills.

We almost skipped this on our way out of town which would have been a huge mistake. Tons of wildlife to see and quiet and peaceful.
